Summer Activities!

School may be out, but Kazan has stayed busy throughout the hot summer months with a variety of fun activities!

5/23-5/25: Taiko Invitationals!
Kazan members ShuWen, Lucy, and Marcus had a wonderful time at this year’s taiko invitationals, meeting other collegiate and professional taiko groups, and learning new skills from the taiko masters! This event really helped us see how we are not just one group, but a member of a much larger taiko community too. We’d like to send a big thank you to CSUN for doing such a wonderful job hosting us this year, and we look forward to next year’s invitationals with UCI Jodaiko!

5/31: UCLA Kyodo Taiko’s Spring Concert
Kazan headed over to UCLA to watch our friend Kyodo Taiko’s spring concert, titled “Yuuhi,” or sunset. It was a very energetic performance, and we loved the creativity in all the pieces! Congratulations on a wonderful performance and show!

7/5: Senshin’s Obon Festival
On July fifth, Kazan came out to Senshin Temple’s annual Obon festival. Senshin’s Obon is special in that it really focuses on the spirituality of Obon, which in Japanese culture, is a festival for celebrating and commemorating ones ancestors. Kazan was very thankful to have been able to help out at the festival and take part in the tradition. The 1000 lanterns were absolutely beautiful, and we even got to see Kinnara Taiko perform! There was also a wonderful performance by Taiko Effect, of which one of our alums Ze Sen Wong is a member!

7/18-7/20: World Taiko Gathering (WTG)
The World Taiko Gathering, hosted by Taikoproject, took place in Little Tokyo this year, and drew taiko players from all over the world. Although Kazan did not take part in the workshops this year, some of us made it out to see “Taiko Nation,” the concert featuring taiko artists from Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and Brazil, just to name a few. It was truly inspiring seeing all the creativity and possibilities of taiko performance, and the finale, “Tsunami,” was extremely emotional and powerful.
